Prepared decaffeinated instant coffee is a brewed-strength liquid beverage with a density of 1.011 g/ml, barely above pure water. One US cup weighs approximately 239 g and one tablespoon about 14.9 g. The near-water density reflects the fact that a standard cup of prepared instant coffee contains only 1-2 g of dissolved coffee solids in 237 ml of water -- the solute concentration is so low that the liquid behaves almost identically to water in mass and flow. The decaffeination process removes at least 97% of the caffeine from the coffee beans before they are brewed and dried into instant form. This prepared beverage is used directly for drinking or as a liquid ingredient in recipes calling for brewed coffee, such as tiramisu, coffee-flavored glazes, or braising liquids.
