English – Unit localization
Primer
This page standardizes unit names and aliases used in recipes. It does not change ingredient density; use weight conversions for mass accuracy.
Methodology
- Unit names and aliases are normalized per language for consistent parsing.
- Equivalences use U.S. government unit definitions and standard culinary measures.
- Entries are summarized from .gov references and verified against common recipe usage.
Unit standards
- US customary: cup, tbsp, tsp, fl oz.
- Metric: mL, L, g, kg.
- UK/Imperial terms are called out where they differ from US.

Examples
Localized labels and standard values:
- cup: US cup - We use the US customary cup = 236.588 mL.
- tbsp: Tablespoon - 1 tbsp = 15 mL.
- tsp: Teaspoon - 1 tsp = 5 mL.
- ml: Milliliter - Metric volume unit. 1 mL equals 1 cubic centimeter.
Edge cases
- US cup (236.588 mL) vs metric cup (250 mL) can shift results.
- Tablespoon/teaspoon abbreviations vary by locale; aliases map to the same unit.
- Fluid ounces are volume; ounces (oz) are mass.
