Cheese Conversion Calculator
A cup of cheese does not have one universal weight. A cup measures volume; cheese is sold and used by weight, and how a shred, crumble or slice packs into that cup changes with the cheese and its form.
Choose the specific cheese and form below—shredded, grated, crumbled, sliced or block—for a result backed by a disclosed source, not a generic average. Looking for cream cheese instead? Use the dedicated Cream Cheese Conversion Calculator.

Pre-shredded cheddar carries anti-caking starch and traps air differently than a freshly grated block.

How many ounces are in a cup of cheese?
There is no single universal answer. A cup measures volume while an ounce of cheese measures weight. The result depends on the cheese and how it is prepared — shredded, grated, crumbled, sliced or block all pack differently.

How many ounces are in a pound of cheese? 16 ounces exactly — a mass-to-mass conversion, independent of cheese or form.
Why cheese cup conversions vary
Cheese type
Parmesan, mozzarella, feta and cheddar do not share one physical profile: fat content, moisture and structure all differ by cheese.
Preparation / form
Block, shredded, finely grated, crumbled and sliced forms of the same cheese are not interchangeable — ChefSolver's cheddar records show 0.48 g/mL shredded versus 1.12 g/mL as a block.
Packing / particle size
The amount of air space between shreds, curls or crumbles affects how much cheese fits in a measuring cup, independent of the cheese's actual density.
Moisture / product format
Fresh, brined, aged and processed products can differ in water content and structure; a profile for one format should not be assumed to apply to another.
ChefSolver has not run its own kitchen-scale experiments for these cheese records. Every number above comes from a disclosed USDA source — see the methodology below for exactly which.

Shredded, grated, sliced, crumbled and block cheese
The calculator models 21 distinct cheese/form combinations, including two independently sourced records for shredded Parmesan that disagree (0.44 g/mL from USDA FoodData Central vs. 0.338 g/mL from USDA SR Legacy) — both are shown rather than averaged into an invented consensus.
How this calculator works
Mass → mass
Exact, profile-independent
1 oz = 28.349523125 g · 1 lb = 453.59237 g
The selected cheese never affects a weight-to-weight conversion.
Volume → volume
Exact, profile-independent
1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL
The selected cheese never affects a volume-to-volume conversion.
Mass ↔ volume
Requires a supported profile
g = mL × density (g/mL)
Uses the selected cheese/form's sourced density. An unrecognized cheese never falls back to a generic density.
Sources and measurement methodology
Every mass↔volume profile is density-derived from a specific ChefSolver ingredient record — grams = mL × density (g/mL) — never a hand-typed number in page prose.

Coverage: 21 source-backed cheese/form profiles. An unlisted cheese or form is intentionally unsupported rather than approximated. Cream cheese is covered by the dedicated Cream Cheese Conversion Calculator.
Limitations
- Volume measurements vary more than weight. How a cheese is packed into a cup is much less consistent than its weight on a scale.
- Preparation form matters. Shredded, grated, crumbled, sliced and block forms of the same cheese are not interchangeable by volume.
- Packing can matter. A loosely spooned cup and a firmly packed cup of the same cheese will not weigh the same.
- Moisture and product format can matter. Fresh, aged, brined and processed products can differ in density.
- Brand-specific formulations can differ. ChefSolver's sourced values are representative, not a guarantee for every brand.
- Sliced and block cheese are not naturally cup-volume products. Use the gram/ounce units for those forms.
- A kitchen scale is preferable when recipe consistency matters, especially for baking.
Cheese conversion FAQ
How many ounces are in a cup of cheese?
It depends on the cheese and its form: a cup measures volume while an ounce measures weight, and how loosely or tightly a cheese packs into a cup changes the answer. ChefSolver's supported profiles range from about 2.6 oz per cup for airy shredded Parmesan (SR Legacy record) up to roughly 9.3 oz per cup for a dense cheddar block — see the comparison table above for every supported cheese and form.
How many cups is 8 oz of cheese?
8 ounces is always 226.796185 grams by weight, but the number of cups depends on the cheese and form you select. Pick your cheese in the calculator above for an exact, source-backed answer.
How many cups are in 1 pound of cheese?
1 pound is exactly 16 ounces and 453.59237 grams by weight — that part never changes. The cup equivalent depends on the cheese and form; use the 1-pound comparison table above or the calculator for a specific profile.
How many ounces are in a pound of cheese?
16 ounces exactly. This is a mass-to-mass conversion, so it does not depend on the cheese or its form.
How many ounces are in a cup of shredded cheese?
It depends on which shredded cheese: ChefSolver's sourced records show about 3.9 oz per cup for shredded mozzarella, 4.0 oz for shredded cheddar, and 3.7 oz (or 2.6 oz under a second USDA source) for shredded Parmesan. Select the specific shredded cheese in the calculator for an exact figure.
How many cups is 8 oz of shredded cheese?
For the shredded cheeses ChefSolver has sourced density data for, 8 oz works out to roughly 2 US cups. See the 8 oz comparison table above for the exact value per cheese.
How many grams are in a cup of cheese?
This ranges widely by cheese and form — from about 78 g per cup for airy shredded Parmesan up to roughly 265 g per cup for a dense cheddar block. There is no single correct answer without specifying the cheese.
Does shredded cheese weigh the same as block cheese?
No. ChefSolver's records show shredded cheddar at 0.48 g/mL versus 1.12 g/mL for a cheddar block — shredding introduces a great deal of air, so a cup of shreds weighs much less than a cup carved from a solid block.
Does grated cheese weigh the same as shredded cheese?
Not necessarily. ChefSolver's grated-Parmesan record (0.33 g/mL) is lighter per cup than its shredded-Parmesan record from USDA FoodData Central (0.44 g/mL) — though a second shredded-Parmesan source (USDA SR Legacy) measures lighter still, at 0.338 g/mL. Weigh when a recipe depends on the ratio.
Should I measure cheese by weight or volume?
Weight is more repeatable, because how tightly a shred, crumble or block packs into a measuring cup can vary between two people or two brands. This calculator still supports volume conversions, tied to a specific, disclosed cheese and form.
Why do different cheese conversion charts disagree?
Charts disagree when they quietly average different cheeses, forms, or sources into one number. ChefSolver shows two real, independently sourced records for shredded Parmesan side by side rather than blending them into an invented consensus value.
What is the difference between an ounce and a fluid ounce?
An ounce (oz) measures weight; a US fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume. They are only interchangeable for a substance with a density of exactly 1 g/mL, which cheese is not. This calculator always labels them separately.
